Rearing Chickens for the Table

In 2011 we will start running courses in rearing chickens for the table.  It will be aimed at very small scale hobby keepers, probably those already keeping a few hens for eggs who would like to also have some meat for the table. It will be a hands on day and will cover the following:

  • Choosing a breed and obtaining eggs

  • Hatching under a broody hen/in an incubator

  • Rearing chicks

  • Diet and lifestyle (of the chicken!)

  • Slaughter... You will slaughter the bird!

  • Plucking and gutting

  • Dressing for the oven/butchering

 

The price will be £70 for the day and will include refreshments, a chicken lunch, and a chicken to take home, slaughtered, plucked and gutted by you!
